Unusual Pots for Container Gardens

Imagination is the key factor in container garden plans that involve unusual planting options. There is no right or wrong when choosing pots for your container gardens. If you like the look of a certain container, no matter how unusual, go ahead and use it for your container garden. What is important is how you prepare the pot for your container gardens before placing your plants in the pot. And remember, container gardens work for all types of plants such as herbs, flowers, vegetables, fruits, and greenery. There is very little you cannot plant in your container garden.
Choosing a Pot
Be sure when you chose pots for your container gardens to do so with a theme in mind. Some theme ideas for container gardens might include Asian or Tuscany or maybe western, English cottage, or whimsical. Once you pick a them for your container garden then you can search for unusual container that go with your contain garden plans.
Preparation & Planting
Once you choose a container for your container garden there are a few simple rules to follow before planting. Be sure, if your container has been used to clean it thoroughly. Scrub your container garden pot with a mixture of bleach and water or some other type of effective cleaning solution. Be sure to rinse very thoroughly. Let the container garden pot dry completely. If you container is porous this may take a little while.
The next step is to put drainage holes in your container garden pot. If your container is made of material that will not allow drainage holes put a pot with drainage holes inside the chosen container. First, place a layer of rocks or pebbles about 1 inch deep at the bottom of your unusual container garden pot. Then place your pot with drainage holes on top of this and plant your flowers in this pot. Be sure to empty your outside pot of any standing water on a regular basis.
If your unusual containers chosen for your container gardens are metal be aware that they will leave rust and water stains on concrete and wood as the water seeps out the drainage holes. It is best to use trays under these pots to prevent staining. Or move these metal pots to a brick or stone surface that will not stain. Of course it all depends on your container garden plans.
When preparing your container garden pot for planting be sure to line the bottom with first some window screen and then a layer of gravel to ensure proper drainage. Fill the container garden pot to about and inch from the rim with some good potting soil. Check with your local nursery to determine the best potting soil for you based on your climate, species of plants you will be planting and location of your container garden pots. When you start placing plants in your container garden pot begin in the center and work your way to the outside. Taller plants are best for center plantings and short or trailing plants do well on the outside of the container garden pot.
Plant Care Tips
Be sure to water the pots in your container gardens on days there is no natural rain. For container garden pots with flowers remove that blooms as soon as they begin to fade to promote increased flower growth.
Some pot ideas that might suit your container garden plans include: using an old wooden cask, or a concrete container might do well with cactus, or maybe and only red wagon for a country garden. If you prefer whimsical then get some old rubber boots use these as a container garden pot. Some large old shells might be the perfect container for a container garden by the sea. You are only limited in your container garden plans by your imagination.
