So when we can’t be digging and hoeing and planting and pruning, we like to carry our love for the outdoors to our holiday season. There are many ways to enjoy gardening during the holidays, but one way you can take advantage of the season is to express your love for the living plant by passing them on as gifts. What plants then make the best holiday gifts?

Chrysanthemums are a popular choice and these will last for up to 8 weeks. You want to give them with the instructions that bright light is necessary for these plants and that they need to be moist at all times. Frosty chrysanthemums can be planted in the garden and even enjoyed next year.

Miniature roses are a lovely gift to give, and come in a wide range of holiday colors. After removing the top halves of the stems, repot miniature roses and keep them misted frequently. The roses should be kept in an unheated area for at least a week before they are moved to a warmer room. Your giftee can transfer them outside by burying the pot in the ground when the warmer temperatures arise.

Pointsettias are of course a natural gift around the holidays and are a popular Christmas symbol. The flowers themselves will last for six months and come in a glorious color range. They will need maximum light and love the warmer rooms of the room. Most people tend to throw away their pointsettias after the season, but they can even be replanted in the garden for an annual foliage plant. Or, if your giftee is an avid gardener themselves, they can replant them outside and with a little TLC can keep the bloom until next holiday season, the gift that keeps on giving!

Miniature evergreens are a lively gift for the holidays as well. They come in many varieties and are perfect choices for table tops, porches, patios, mantels, or end tables. They will like frequent moisture but are very hardy plants that will provide the loveliest scent of evergreen to any holiday fiesta.

Plants are always wonderful gifts to give or receive and can provide spirit lifting color and brightness, especially in the gray of winter.
