The Duranta erecta is a fast growing shrub that will reach approximately 20-25 feet. If you like to prune, you can tame the height on the bush, and make it suitable for smaller gardens as well.
The Duranta is also known as Sky Flower, Golden Dew Drop, and Pigeon Berry, with many varieties belonging to the species. Each variety possesses its own wealth of names, but they are all similar enough to each other that planting them, no matter what species, is very easy. The beauty about the Duranta is also that it is very versatile, and can be grouped and planted with other shrubs or plants as well, giving YOU the variety you crave as a gardener.
The Duranta is an ideal winter shrub because it will give you the green shades you crave in the winter months. The most common varietals of Duranta will give unique foliage of a gorgeous medium green hue and offer you gold colored leaves as well.
These flowers will grow individually or in mass creating a very powerful effect on your winter garden. The blooms will also appear at the same time as clusters of orange berries that hang in pretty panicle form. This combination of violet and orange is sure to spruce up any winter garden.
In both winter and spring gardening, you will want to prune your Duranta and give it regular trimming in order to maintain its compact and bushy growth style. You will want to ensure you take care not to remove all of the flower buds at the same time, a task easy enough for any gardener. If you like, you can even limb the shrub up a small tree and grow it from a trunk for a very pretty gardening effect. This shrub though pretty, is a fast grower, so keep your eyes on it.
