If you live in a dry climate, one of your garden woes may be that you don’t have the advantage of more temperate climates to add some color to your fall garden. The Northern Hemisphere is blessed with a change in climate that allows for rich foliage and rich autumn colors to brighten up any landscape, but drier climates simply do not have that advantage. So how can you brighten up your gardens when you don’t have the temperature change to provide for rich autumn colors?
Ornamental bushes at this point will be your best bet when it comes to adding some color and livelihood to your fall garden. Now that your summer annuals are finished, and your winter annuals aren’t quite ready to plant, you can implement some colourful ornamental bushes to add some interest and color to your landscape.
Ornamental bushes will offset some seasonal drabness that you may experience in between seasons, and fall flowers and shrubs are available in wide varieties and selections. Remember when choosing shrubs and bushes what function you want them to perform as well. Are you using them for screening purposes? As a colourful backdrop? What do you want your bushes to do? Do not simply choose shrubs or bushes based on their color palette.
Shrubs such as the one we see here Tecoma stans are gorgeous and offer a lovely autumn palette that will brighten up any landscape. They come in beautiful tubular flowers with color varieties in orange and yellow. You can combine these with shrubs such as Tecoma capensis to add some variety to your shrub themes as well as some unity and diversity.
Autumn is a great time of year for these shrubs as you will find they perform a wide range of functions no matter what your landscape requires. They also will flower over extended periods in dry climates, giving you quite a healthy bang for your gardening buck. Other staples you may want to consider are the Plumbago, or the delicate Abelia Grandiflora, two species which are also versatile and very pretty.
When you can’t rely on autumn foliage to add some color to your gardens, use flowering shrubs to make your garden colors go a long way all season long.
