As the summer comes to an end and people begin to think about going back to school and stowing away all the beach toys for next year, one can’t neglect their garden. Just because the season is over for many of the beautiful blooms you’ve been enjoying over the past few months doesn’t mean that you need to admit defeat and wait until next spring to start planting. There are plenty of beautiful flowers that not only do well in the cooler fall weather but will actually thrive in it!
Asters are one of autumn’s stars! This beautiful flower is perfect for planting anytime from the middle of August to the end of October. These flowers usually come in a beautiful deep blue shade and will do well when they are positioned in direct sunlight. Some of the most favorite strains of this flower are Monch, Dwarf Asters, Professor Kippenburg, and Rose Serenade. Remember to pinch the top of the flowers the following summer so that you will be left with a full bush rather than tall, spindly stems that will just fall over.
Shasta Daisies are another popular flower for fall gardens. If you’re not interested in plain white flowers decorating your landscape, choose from the full range of colors these gorgeous flowers now come in! The Clara Curtis strain of this flower is a beautiful salmon pink and Cobham Gold are a rich, vibrant yellow. If you like to stay true to the simple things in life, look for the famous Goldcap strain, which is almost entirely white. When they are placed in direct sunlight with soil that has adequate drainage, these flowers do extremely well in the fall. Be sure to change their location in your garden every three to four years to ensure that these blooms stay looking like perfection!
Coneflowers and Joe-Pye weed will both produce flowers that have a beautiful lavender color and look much like daisies. By pruning your Joe-Pye regularly, you can extend its life well into November. Another bonus to these flowers is that they will attract many butterflies to your yard! Both of these flowers need very good drainage systems in place but the Joe-Pye is quite needy when it comes to the amount of water it needs. Coneflowers will also do best if they are placed in an area of the garden that receives shade during the hottest part of the day.
Extend the months of your garden by choosing out the perfect fall flowers! Gardening is a year-round hobby and elements such as cooler weather and rain shouldn’t keep you from doing what you love!
