Eggs: They’re Not Just for Breakfast Anymore!
Of the many items lying around your house that are wonderful additions to your garden, there is little that is more valuable than the eggshell. There are so many wonderful uses for eggshells in the garden and around the yard that the possibilities can be quite endless. Remember throughout the entire year to save your eggshells, rinse them out, and save them in a paper bag until springtime and you will be astounded at the difference they make among your plants! Here are just a few of the amazing uses eggshells have in the garden!
Take all of the eggshells that are in halves and use them for mini pots when it’s time to start your plants from seed. Instead of using pots or beginner kits that can make transplanting difficult, use an egg shell as the starter pot. When the plant is ready to be transplanted to a larger pot or directly into the ground, simply crack the eggshell and the plant and its roots will remain perfectly intact. Never has transplanting been easier! Make sure that you place a small hole in the bottom of the eggshell to allow for drainage and keep an empty egg box to keep your seedlings in. This will make it much easier to keep the eggshell pots stable. Once you have cracked the egg around the roots, add the shell to your compost or your garden.
If you have eggshells that have cracked, there are many uses for these as well. Simply putting down a layer of cracked eggshells in the garden can do wonders in keeping cutworms away and piling them around the bottom of plants can also be a great deterrent for slugs. Once you have put down a new seed bed in the garden, placing some shattered eggshells along the top will help keep the seeds safe from birds that are looking to eat. Keeping eggshells in your garden is also a wonderful natural way to add calcium to the soil, making your plants much bigger and healthier! Also throw handfuls of eggshells into the compost and it will add a ton of calcium to the heap as you turn it. Using eggshells in the same fashion while you till the soil will also make for much healthier soil.
These are only just a few of the uses that eggshells have in the garden! They are a great deterrent for pests, keep other animals away, and improve the condition of your plants. Surely this proves that eggs definitely are not just for breakfast anymore!
